Every Child...Every Eagle...Every Day...We are ROCKLEDGE
Rockledge Elementary School in Woodbridge, Virginia, opened in 1972 and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2022, marking five decades of service to the Woodbridge community. The school’s colors are green and gold, and its mascot is the Eagle. From its inception, it has served as a key educational hub for families in the Woodbridge area, offering a wide range of programs and extracurricular activities.
The name Rockledge likely originates from the historic Rockledge estate which was built around 1760 and was owned by local business owner John Ballendine. Mr. Ballendine owned and operated a foundry and milling operation in the local area. The Rockledge estate was passed through several prominent local families and became a notable landmark in the area.
In 2022, Rockledge Elementary marked its 50th anniversary with a large family and community event. The celebration featured inflatables, carnival games, hidden coins, rock decorating, face painting, a cake walk, food trucks, and more. The school’s cafeteria was transformed into a display of its history, showcasing current and former programs, clubs, yearbooks, photographs, floor plans from the school’s early days to the present, and aerial images of the campus over the decades. A special gift was a giant rock donated by the local Vulcan quarry, painted gold and signed by all who attended the event.
Every year Rockledge hosts a Graduation Walk for alumni who are graduating high school. These seniors return right before their graduation to visit their school and teachers. It is a community favorite event that happens every spring.
Rockledge Elementary has grown from a single opening in 1972 into a vibrant, community-centered school with a rich history, celebrated milestones, and a strong connection to the Woodbridge area.
